What volunteers are currently needed at SAEP?

SAEP's volunteer needs change regularly, so check back often to see what we are looking for!

 

We also sometimes welcome volunteers with specific ideas or skills that that are not on our "wish list". If you have an idea, please fill out the volunteer application form and let us know what you've got to offer!

Volunteer positions open in 2012

» Media and Communications Coordinator

Programme: Institutional Development
Description: Coordinate the media and communications operations for a dynamic NGO. Responsibilities include electronic and print communications; maintaining and developing the website; public relations; and helping hone SAEP's media strategy.
Full-time or part-time? Ideally full-time; minimum 3 days a week
Dates: January/February - December 2012.
Requirements: Self-motivated and organised; strong background in communication, PR and/or journalism; strong organisational skills; interest in working with youth. Beneficial but not required: graphic design/web design skills, nonprofit experience, background in education, previous experience in South Africa.
Other: Minimum stay six months; year-long interns are preferred.

» Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator

Description: In charge of monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment for all SAEP programmes.
Full-time or part-time? Full time.
Dates: January/February - December 2012. 
Requirements: Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in a relevant discipline; work experience in programme research, design, data collection and analysis. Prior experience in/knowledge of South Africa and education is beneficial but not required.
Other: Minimum stay six months; year-long interns are preferred.

» Fundraising and Institutional Development Volunteers

Programme: Institutional Development
Description: Assist with a variety of fundraising tasks, including grant writing, donor reporting, event planning, donor communication, research, and print and online media.
Full-time or part-time? Ideally full-time; minimum 3 days a week
Dates: January/February - November 2012.
Requirements: Self-motivated and organised; strong writing background; strong organisational skills. Previous teaching experience or experience working with youth is preferred but not required.
Other: Minimum three-month stay; volunteers who can commit to 6-12 months are preferred.

» Arts outreach tutors

Description: Teach workshops to high school learners 1-4 times per week week in one of the following art forms: creative writing, dance, drama, visual art, choral music, photography, film.
Full-time or part-time? Part-time
Hours: 1:30-4:30pm, one or more afternoons per week (includes transport to and from schools), plus preparation for classes
Dates: February - October 2012 (except during school holidays in June/July). 
Requirements: Background in the art form you wish to teach, interest in working with youth. Previous teaching experience or experience working with youth is preferred but not required.
Other: Year-long volunteers are preferred, though volunteers who can only commit for half the year (February-June or July-October) will also be considered.

» Environmental education tutors

Description: Teach after-school workshops on topics including biodiversity, renewable energy, natural resources, water and energy conservation, climate change, recycling, etc, including debates and public speaking.
Full-time or part-time? Part-time
Hours: 1:30-4:30pm, 2-3 days a week (includes transport to and from schools), plus preparation for classes
Dates: February - October 2012.
Requirements: Environmental knowledge; an interest in environmental issues. Previous experience in teaching or working with teenagers a plus.
Other: In addition to weekly commitments, must be available to participate in SAEP's environment festival, winter camps (held in June/July), and hikes (once per month, Saturday mornings, from 8:00am to approximately 3:00pm). Year-long volunteers are preferred, though volunteers who can only commit for half the year (February-June or July-October) will also be considered.

Ongoing volunteer needs

» Handyman

Description: Fix leaking roofs, mend plumbing problems, fix jungle gyms and other broken things at the centers.
Full-time or part-time? Part time or full time
Hours: Mostly mornings, but can be flexible.
Dates: Any
Requirements: Experience with plumbing, fixing roofs, etc.

» Mentors for university students

Programme: Tertiary Support Programme

Description: Mentor one or more of SAEP's tertiary students who is studying towards a degree in your field. This can include email correspondence, face-to-face meetings, tutoring, job shadowing, helping prepare CVs, going on fun outings together, etc.
Full-time or part-time? Part-time
Hours: Flexible
Dates: Flexible
Requirements: Committed; reliable; quick to respond to emails and other forms of communication; willing to share skills, insights, advice and knowledge.

» Photographers

Programme: Communications and Publicity

Description: Our needs include photographs of our day-to-day activities in the high schools and early childhood development centres; portraits and "day-in-the-life" shots for profiles of our bridging year alumni, tertiary support students and ECD centre principals; and photographs of our work around the office, to be used on our website, our annual reports, marketing materials and electronic communications.

Hours: Flexible
Dates: Flexible
Requirements: Photography experience; own equipment.
Other: A great project for photography students, photographers aiming to build their portfolios, international visitors to SA, and professional photographers looking to give back to the community.
