Environmental Education

HS - Environmental Education

During the year, our friends at the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA) take learners from SAEP high schools Sinethemba, Zisukhanyo, Intsebenziswano, Siyazaka and Sophumelela on monthly hikes throughout the Cape Peninsula. MCSA leaders provide mentorship and invaluable lessons in mountaineering and environmental appreciation.

For the sixth year in a row, SAEP partnered with the University of Cape Town Mountain and Ski Club (UCT MSC). The UCT students take learners on a series of excursions designed to promote teamwork, leadership and environmental education.

In June 2011, SAEP welcomed a new volunteer, Laura Rodriguez, who was tasked with continuing the environmental education clubs at Zisukhanyo, Sinethemba and Sophumelela. These clubs were started by Brenna Reagan and Lianna Meskun in January. They focus on environmental education with a particular emphasis on topics that have a direct day-to-day bearing on township life. Additionally, the clubs participate in field trips, hikes and community clean-up projects.

I have had many days in Hope Scholars and I can teach other people what I have learned and all the things we have done. My teacher asks me, "What have you eaten? Why are you so respectful?" And I say nothing have I eaten. I just joined Hope Scholars. The teacher says that before I was not doing school work like I do now. She says I am also better to others. For this I am glad to be in Hope Scholars.
