The sculpture, which will be featured at SAEP's upcoming Philippi Arts Festival on September 24th, has been a long term project undertaken by the Environment Club.

Throughout the term, learners have been collecting empty cans and plastic bottles to create a sculpture with the theme 'Let us adopt good habits of waste management'. The sculpture is...

Chatting and excitement filled the mini-buses as we traversed the Philippi settlement towards the Drift Sands Nature Reserve.

56 learners filled the lecture hall where Natasja, the conservation manger, conducted a well illustrated session on the importance of wetlands. After the session, the students were engaged into group tasks of micro-habitat observation. The aim was towards identifying all the possible negative impacts the natural...

These two ECD centres, looking after 25 to 45 children each, are both not registered yet and therefore in constant need of additional support in order to provide for their children. The irregular and small school fees paid by parents are the only income that the crèches currently receive.

Children who grow up in a township environment like Philippi often experience loss and grief at a very young age - from losing their home and belongings to losing parents and other close family members to HIV/Aids, malnutrition, fire, accidents or crime.

Even though it is certainly difficult for adults to deal with situations of loss and grief, it is even more difficult for young children and youth to cope with such feelings.

While teaching the course, Lindy noticed that Thandolwethu had only a two-ring top electric stove - of which only one ring worked - to cook for over 25 children and 3 staff. With the support of her family, Lindy was able to raise enough money to purchase a...

The set was bought by SAEP for use in our free after-school Marimba lessons, a part of SAEP Arts Outreach, but Sophumelela is free to use the set during the regular school day.

The education wing of the gallery, in partnership with a newly launched NGO called the Lalela project, was running a month long series of arts workshops. As a trained Chef I have done numerous Health & Hygiene courses and have learnt how to cook food in order to retain all of its health giving Vitamins and Minerals.
