SAEP Arts
Program

Under the leadership of Charne Lavery, SAEP began offering a broad-based Arts Program in 2007, building upon its earlier activities in poetry, creative writing, and drama.  Meet Charne and learn more about SAEP's offerings in Drama, Visual Arts, Creative Writing and Music, presented with the collaboration of a large group of students from the University of Cape Town.

 Charne Lavery,
Arts Programme Co-ordinator

Charne Lavery is a recent graduate of UCT with an honours in English literature, and is working with SAEP in 2007 to set up a new Arts Programme in SAEP's five high schools.

Charne grew up in Stutterheim, a little town in the Eastern Cape, and studied a BA in English, History and Philosophy while hiking, reading and playing in Cape Town. Charne kept herself busy through her involvement in many outreach organizations during her studies, including teaching reading to junior school learners in Lavender Hill and starting an activist group to address the political situation of Zimbabwe.

Charne is excited about working with SAEP, a fluid and friendly organization responsive to the expressed needs of the communities it serves. She plans to continue with her studies overseas next year, either in the field of literature or development studies.

SAEP thanks Charne for the hard work, enthusiasm, and creative energy she brings to SAEP!
