KAMVA
EDUCARE CENTRE
(Meaning ‘Future’)
Kamva
Educare Centre cares for 96 children and has 6 staff members. Nolukholo
Mase established the
crèche in 1999 after completing her studies for Educare Training. She
has been the principal of the centre for 8 years and the centre
continues to progress from strength to strength with the help received
form its association with SAEP. Recently the centre had a successful
completion of the construction of a toilet block funded by the Wings of
Support (a private initiative by KLM staff – Netherlands) through SAEP.
The Wings of Support was also able to finance other necessary
improvements at the centre such as the installation a security fence and
the renovation of a garage into a beautiful classroom for the pre-school
grade R pupils. Wings of Support were pleased with the success of the
Kamva project and wish to continue working with the centre to further
upgrade it.

NONCEDO EDUCARE CENTRE
(‘To help’)
Nolithemba Bolisi, the principal, established Noncedo Educare Centre in
1997. Initially, the centre cared for 36 children but presently due to
increased demand, 110 children from the community of Philippi are
provide day care,
pre-school
preparation and supervised play
with the help of 8 staff members. In 2006 a branch of JDI Just Do it
funded the building of a new concrete block classroom and also nominated
the principal for a Unilver award which led to Noncedo receiving funds
to construct a toilet block for the children. During the same year the
centre also received funds from the Department of Social Services which
were used to build a second classroom (to replace the original very old
wood and iron structure), and a kitchen in which they are able to
prepare two nutritious meals daily for the children.

QHAMANI
EDUCARE CENTRE
(‘Grow further’)
Qhamani
Educare centre was established in 1996 by Nomsa (Nokhaya) Manxiwa-Nqeza
who is also the principal of the centre. To begin with, the centre had
only 40 children, but has since grown to accommodate 105 children
through the help it receives form SAEP. 6 staff members care for the
children. The present crèche building consists of 3 large rooms (which
accommodate toddlers and pre-school children), a kitchen, toilets,
office/ sickroom and caretaker’s room. However the centre has a small
outside play area and thus recognizing the importance of play SAEP has
managed to help Qhamani raise funds for the construction of a double
storey building. Qhamani is currently awaiting the approval of the
building plans from the City Council. Marieke Galema, a social worker
from Netherlands presently a volunteer at SAEP (March – May 2007) has
been working closely with Qhamani. |

NOLUTHANDO
EDUCARE CENTRE
(‘’With love’)
Noluthando
Educare Centre was founded in 1995 by Ncumeka Jacobs (the principal) so
as to provide day-care and prepare needy children aged 0 – 6 years for
primary education by offering early childhood development programmes.
Although established more than ten years ago, the centre is still facing
numerous challenges such as the lack of financial resources. Money for
salaries, equipment and feeding of the children is lacking. This is
because until fairly recently Noluthando has not been registered wit the
Department of Social Services, and so was not eligible for a subsidy. It
was dependent on fees from the parents (who are mostly unemployed or
earn low wages) to fund all expenses. SAEP has been working closely with
the centre with
Nomagugu Dube a 4th year social work student from the
University of Fort Hare currently on placement with SAEP (January – June
2007) concentrating her work on Noluthando. Due to her hard work with
the principal the
centre is now registered and hopes to receive its first subsidy soon. We
are also in the process of getting the centre registered as an Non
Profit Organisation and assisting them to be able to receive funds from
the Department of Education. |

Because of the
successful completion of the Kamva renovation (above), Wings of Support
will be donating funds to attend to one of the most urgent needs of
Noluthando – the construction of a toilet block and a kitchen for the
preparation of meals for the children.
Noluthando
will also soon be receiving a new classroom, many thanks to Breadline
Africa who donated
two refrigeration containers, which will be joined and adapted for use
as a classroom. Recognition is also given to
contributions
received from JDI, Isidingo Containers and Indigo Cosmetics who provided
funds to make it possible to renovate the container to classroom. |

QHAMA
EDUCARE CENTRE
(‘Grow’)
Sithelwa Soji who is also the principal of the centre established Qhama
Educare Centre in 1996. The centre provides day care and school
preparation to 85 children and has 6 staff members. The centre received
funds from the Department of Social Services Education to put up a wall
around its premises. The centre will also be funded by Wings of Support
to attend to its most urgent needs.

OTHER NEWS
American University group
For the last few years,
SAEP has been hosting groups
of students from the American University (AU)
for 2
days, showing them our work, giving them a township tour and introducing them to
the community of Philippi we are working with. The groups also get directly
involved with various service projects. This year in March part of the group did
some much needed painting at three of the creches, while others in the group got
involved in other programmes run by SAEP.
Quilts
Since late
2005 Stephanie Farrel’s mother Frances and her friends have been sewing
beautiful quilts for the children at the crèches. Stephanie was a volunteer for
SAEP who told her mother about the organisation and since then SAEP has been
receiving quilts all the way from America just for the children.
EPap delivery
The Red Hat Renegades, Indigo Cosmetics, JDI and Union of Jewish Women are still
supplying ePap on a monthly basis to the crèches. Epap is
a highly
nutritious porridge developed specifically to address nutrient deficiencies in
the malnourished and in those with weakened immune systems. It is a powdery
mixture of pre-cooked mealie meal, soya and a host of vitamins and minerals that
can be mixed with cold or lukewarm water or milk to create a filling porridge or
shake. The mixture comes in vanilla, banana and strawberry flavours, and has
been proven to have 29 times the nutritional value of refined mealie meal and to
be equivalent to eating a five-course meal in terms of nutrition.
Rotary donations
The Rotary Club of Claremont has raised a large sum of money through a matching
grant with a club in UK, which is going to be used to fund numerous gifts to the
crèches which include a container, jungle gym, sink, 12 cots, mattresses, 60
baby chairs and lots more.
