SAEP PROFILES

"I am Ayanda Mpu, 19 years old and an intern with SAEP. I got involved in SAEP in 2001 through an  environment project that was conducted by Michel Roger, an architect from France who came to work at Sinethemba as a volunteer. That project taught us a lot about our environment, and it made me more interested in getting more information to have a full grasp about environmental issues. SAEP is also trying to empower the Philippi community about their environment, particularly  waste management and wetlands.

In 2002, after completing my matric, I went to Rosebank College to do a diploma in IT Programming and Networking. Then I decided to join SAEP instead of doing my job shadowing in 2003, and this is working fine. In 2004 I plan to upgrade my studies at UCT or Pensinsula Technikon. The main thing is to do IT networking because it is the thing that I love.

I am now involved in teaching computer skills at three high schools – Sinethemba, Zisukhanyo and Oscar Mpetha. I enjoy going there because most of the students are interested in IT but do not know what it is all about. I have started teaching them about hardware, software, Internet and email. I am also using programmes to teach them how to type so they can learn fast.  I like SAEP because it is empowering the youth in extra-mural activities and in leadership, the skills I have gained from SAEP."
