"I joined SAEP in 2000 because I was in a debating society and we did not have any teacher taking care of us. We asked SAEP for help with challenging debates and improving our English language. After a few months I could see the difference, because we entered a competition that involved the multiracial schools. We were the only so-called black school and we managed to do exceptionally well.

I then graduated from high school in 2002, but did not have money to continue my education. I also needed to find out what I really wanted to do. So I decided to engage my self in a gap year program which mainly concentrates on Community Service. I am working with SAEP because I believe I can make a difference in the lives of other learners in Philippi. SAEP’s philosophy has been to care about all kinds of environments, the social environment and the natural environment. With a bit of help on my part I believe we can carry this philosophy through. With just a bit of care and unlock the limitless potential they possess. If it is not me Luzuko who is going to do it, then who will? Next year I plan to pursue a course in Public Relations.

The help I can offer is in the area of assisting kids to express themselves:

  • Creative writing - I can create an environment where it is possible for them to write poems and stories.
  • Journalism skills – I can provide the kids with the organising skills that they need to produce a student newspaper, encourage leadership skills, and an opportunity to improve their written English.
Debating – I know this will improve their personalities in a competitive sense and in life generally, by improving their critical thinking skills, communication skills and constructive argumentative skills. This is already working. The students are reporting that they can see improvements in their performance and the numbers are increasing rapidly because their friends can see the change and want to benefit too."
