Sinethemba S.S.S.: Plant Identification on School Grounds


Plant Identification at Sinethemba Botanical Garden.

On 13th October, 2000, under the supervision of SAEP interns and with the assistance of the Sinethemba gardener, students from Sinethemba S.S.S. identified plants at "Sinethemba Botanical Gardens" ( the grounds of Sinethemba S.S.S.).

A total of 13 plants were identified.  They are as follows:


1. Othonna sentata.  Description: low succulent shrub growing among rocks.
2. Othona arborescens.
3. Herichrysum.  Description: grey wooly stem, flowers Jul-Oct, grows in rocky and sandy places from Namibia to Little Karoo.
4. Senecio tamoides
5. Lobelia pinifolia.
6. Adromischus hemisphaericus
7. Bayhimia galpini.  Common name: Pride of the Cape.  Description: orange in colour.
8. Chirinia decumbens.  Grows in sandy places.
9. Corycium orobanchoids.  Grows in sandy places.
10. Crane flower.  Grows up to 1,5m tall.
11. Selacio corymbosa
12. Strelitzia rechale.  An eastern coastal bush.
13. Aciapanthus.  Description: evergreen, grows on rocky hillsides, grows up to 1,5m tall, with leaves 500x600mm.
