SINETHEMBA
NATIONAL DEBATING CHAMPIONS

In their first year of interscholastic debating, the Sinethemba Debating Team ranked very highly as individual debaters and  won first the provincial and then the South Africa national debating championship.  Members of the team were Luzuko Hina (Grade 11), Bulelane Futshane (grade 11) and Khangelani Mtyahalela (grade 10).  The story below from the Cape Argus of October 16, 2001 tells it all. 

They had been coached and supported by a series of SAEP Interns and Fellows, including Eva Du Buisson (Duke University, USA), Nick Dossetor (UK), and Cathy De Lazzero (Oberlin College, USA), and members of the University of Cape Town debate team, led by Bradley Shuttleworth.   

Unfortunately, the opportunity for the Sinethemba debaters to debate abroad did not materialize because the sponsor withdrew funding at the last minute.
