EVALUATING
SAEP'S INITIATIVE
AT
SINETHEMBA S.S.S

Sinethemba
Senior Secondary School

OVERVIEW

SAEP has been involved at Sinethemba S.S.S. in Philippi township since May 1999.  During that time, we have initiated a number of different activities to carry out our mission of environmental education and sustainable development (or which education is an essential component).  In the process, we have learned much about the needs of township high schools, their staff and their learners.  We have modified our programmes -- and created new ones -- to be responsive to those needs.  Some of our programmes have been extremely successful; others far less so.  We can learn equally from the ones and the others.

SAEP is more convinced than ever that the future of South Africa will be determined in large part by what happens in its high schools, especially for those young people with the highest academic and career potential and strongest qualities of leadership and social commitment.

For these reasons, SAEP is eager to undertake an evaluation of its initiative at Sinethemba S.S.S. to date in order to improve our programmes in the future and share the benefits of our experience with other organisations and individuals, both professional educators and other interested parties.   An issue of particular concern is how to get teachers interested and build their capacity in the areas in which SAEP is working so that the project will be "sustainable"after SAEP's work is done.

INTERIM EVALUATION: DECEMBER 2000

SAEP did an interim evaluation of its initiative at Sinethemba in late 2000.  A questionnaire was circulated to the Sinethemba teachers in October and the results were analysed by SAEP Fellow Belemane Semoli, who prepared an  Evaluation Report.
