African Jazz

The African jazz music is mostly listened to by the mature people in the Township.  This music has powerful  inspirations in our native history, which is why those who are mature have passions for African Jazz.

Kwaito Music

This music is the local music and it is mostly listened to by the youth, as they say it is taken from the real life of the township. These are some of the artists that sings the Kwaito music: M' du, Mandoza.

That is the music that is mostly listed by used in the African style.  The dancing to this music is in the African way, and this music is mostly popular to the Xhosa people. This is one of the leading Umbhaqanga artists: Umfazi omnyama Amathitsha amhlophe.

Art

Art became very popular in Philippi early in the 80s, and it has been used in different ways such as to improve awareness in deferent aspect:  Educational graphics are found on the walls of the play grounds and are a tourist attraction. Those who have talent in art use art to make their living by selling their art in the market places in downtown Cape Town. This encourages development of the abilities of the entrepreneur: make use of the skill that you possess in order to improve the level of prosperity in the township.  Township art is selling very well in the market.  See for example the news article on artist Marijani R Magogo who lives in Philippi.

Poetry

Read poems by some of some of our best young poets, the voices of the township, on our special  Poetry Page.  Here is a sample that expresses one man's feelings about living in Philippi:

Philippi Life

Being a Philippian is not so bad,
Not so nice either.
Not so nice because such bad things happen here.
Such horrible and heartless things.
Like when a young child was killed, not only killed,
She really died a horrible death because she was
Butchered, just like a sheep, goat or a cow.
Philippi might not be known as a most
Violent place, but it is not heaven either.

In spite of all those bad things Philippi is the best,
Not like the rest.
I say it is the best because the leaders of tomorrow
Presidents and ministers are going to come from Philippi.
Only because hard working people of Philippi have got a vision
Dream and goal.
No wonder Philippi is feared by many and respected
By all!

Philippi, the people’s community
Is working for freedom trying
To kill the cat.
We fought the struggle and got out of the jungle
And won. Now fighting the
Combination of poverty and racism
What I know is we are getting there
Slowly but surely.
One day we will buy the lorries, others pushing the
Trollies, trying to rebuild the Philippi community.
We see the light at the end of the tunnel
Now we try to raise our tone
Calling and stopping trouble.
All in all we are working together saying "Viva!"
With bold voices.
I love Philippi!
