Johannesburg's ADT Teach welcomed its new Grade 10 recruits into the programme this year with a celebratory induction at Siyakhula's Hall. Two hundred thirty-two new learners will be participating in the ADT Teach programme, designed to provide township learners with the IT skills necessary for the job market and tertiary studies. Students will make use of the programme's mobile computer lab, participating in weekly classes run by trained IT professional tutors.
Celebrity actress Hlubi Mboya, best known for her role as Nandipha Sithole on the TV show 'Isidingo,' was present to oversee the ceremony and encourage students with a motivational speech, generating great excitement amongst the learners. Two Grade 12 ADT Teach learners also emceed the event, proving their maturity with excellent composure despite technological hiccups.
This year, in addition to the new learners, 117 grade 11 and 12 learners returned to the programme, raising the total reach to an impressive 349 learners in Johannesburg. SAEP hopes to continue the expansion of this innovative initiative in years to come and see all programme participants to their high school graduation.
