Thandolwethu Educare

Thandolwethu Educare is run by a highly motivated and ambitious principal, Constance Ndzelwane. Constance was formerly a teacher at Noncedo, and opened her own centre in 2007. Thandolwethu used to be the centre most in need of assistance, as Constance cared for 5 children in a small shack on the property of her home. When it became a partner with SAEP, plans to build a new structure had to be urgently investigated and funding had to be found. With the help of Sandra Scholten, a Dutch volunteer, and Wings of Support, SAEP was able to erect a small but safe and secure, new structure for Thandolwethu in 2009.

In order to move Thandolwethu from a day-care facility to a proper educare, many improvements are still necessary including the acquisition of books and educational materials as well as additional staff.

Despite the small size of her centre, and the many challenges she faces, Constance is determined to develop her situation, and has enrolled in a number of courses including first aid, financial management, community development and early childhood education.

Before I joined [the Bridging Year] Programme, I was shy, not talkative and did not know about computers. I did not know which careers to follow or consider. But with SAEP that was all organized and I am now free to say, 'one day I will be an editor of a big newspaper,' since now I am a reporter for West Cape News Agency.
