Research on Progress of SAEP-ECD Programme, July 2008

Sarah Argue, a student from the Clinton School of Public Service in the USA, came to SAEP in May 2008 for ten weeks to evaluate the progress of the ECD Programme as well as the interaction with the educare centres. She interviewed all 12 of the principals with whom we were working at the time, as well as SAEP staff members and volunteers on their work, and produced a comprehensive report on the development of each centre according to a detailed list of criteria. As quoted on page 6 of her research paper, SAEP has come a long way. “Five years later, SAEP-ECD has made remarkable strides in improving the physical environment and quality of care in most of the original crèches, has accepted three new crèches with which to work, and is in a trial period with an additional four.”

Research on Development of Safety Unity Crèche Forum, October 2008

SAEP’s goal has not only been the advancement of individual ECD centres but also the development of the Safety Unity Crèche Forum as a support and advocacy structure within the Philippi ECD community. To evaluate the extent to which this goal has been reached, to explore the challenges, and to consider the way forward, SAEP had contracted a group of UCT Sociology Development students in October 2008. Following up on the findings of the students, SAEP has started to initiate their suggestions to increase the independency of the Forum and improve internal communication since.

Follow-Up Research on Progress of SAEP-ECD Programme, July 2009

Brittni Dixon-Smith, a student from Stanford University (USA), joined SAEP in June 2009 to follow up on Sarah Argue’s research from 2008, evaluating the progress of the ECD Programme and individual crèches. A copy of her research report will be available here soon.

Thank you SAEP for enabling me to have this experience and to have enriched my stay in South Africa. This will be an encounter that will remain with me for a long time coming. I wish all the crèches to carry on the wonderful work they are doing and may they continue to grow and develop.
