Zamukhanyo Educare

Zamukhanyo Educare is one of the ten original crèches working with SAEP and is run by Nobuntu Mkhencele, the current Chairperson of the Safety Unity Crèche Forum. Nobuntu's long-term experience running her crèche and her willingness to help her peers has made her one of the Forum's most knowledgeable and trusted members. Zamukhanyo provides a safe play space for 126 children, and is run by Nobuntu and five staff members

Nobuntu keeps careful financial records and has received help with preparation for the annual auditing. She and her staff of five have benefited from continuous improvements to their skills through workshop and training opportunities. Nobuntu notes a Waldorf childhood education programme as being particularly useful, as well as first aid training, and a workshop on HIV/AIDS awareness. The staff and parents are also motivated to participate in fundraising schemes to improve the quality of education at the crèche.

Zamukhanyo received a beautiful new structure in 2007, a process that took the majority of the year and was officially completed on Do It Day 2007, when SAEP and Commundo volunteers put a final coat of paint on its outside walls. Johan Pauw, a Dutch building volunteer had one room partitioned to create an office and sick bay. Members of Old Mutual staff similarly brought decorations for the classrooms and kitchen, putting the finishing touches on the new structure. The yard has been kept clean by local high school students volunteering their time as part of a community service project.
