In 2009, SAEP collaborated with ADT Security to launch their latest Corporate Social Investment project - ADT Teach. ADT Teach is an innovative computer education programme designed to provide township learners with the IT skills necessary for the job market and their tertiary studies. With two mobile computer lab outfitted with 40 laptops in total, the programme provides weekly classes for 314 learners in Grade 10, 11 and 12 at Sophumelela, Zisukhanyo and Intsebenziswano High Schools in Cape Town and 183 learners in Grade 10 and 11 at Allanridge, Umqhele and Tsosoloso High Schools in Johannesburg. The curriculum covers the learning objectives of the nationally recognised IT Certificate in End User Computing provided by the South African Services Skills Education Training Authority. Successful Grade 10 learners progress to Grade 11 and if they make it again they go to Grade12 and graduate with a national certificate.
At a Grade 10 level, ADT Teach gives learners who had previously never touched a computer the ability to create spreadsheets, presentations, CVs, letters and posters. A 3G router enabled them to use the internet for research and email - unprecedented in any school where ADT Teach is happening - and each practical exercise is complemented by a discussion of its relevance to the society. In 2010, ADT Teach started in Johannesburg. It hosted an art project for its Cape Town learners while Johannesburg learners were taken to career fairs.
Special thanks goes to Luyanda Kota (National Coordinator), Nqobani Nkala (Senior Tutor - Cape Town), Simphiwe Dasi (Junior Tutor - Cape Town), Kudakwashe Sibanda (Senior Tutor - Johannesburg), Jacob Mathumba (Junior Tutor - Johannesburg), Patrick Collins (ex National Coordinator), Avuyile Koli (ex Senior Tutor - Cape Town) and Francisca Chikondo (ex Senior Tutor - Johannesburg) for their outstanding commitment towards ADT Teach.
“ During my Bridging Year at SAEP, I changed as a person. I gained leadership skills and confidence and I changed from being an introvert to an extrovert. ”
