Intended Impact

SAEP works to ensure that its Interns will:
- Improve their skills in core academic subject areas, especially English, mathematics, and the sciences;
- Improve their results by rewriting two to four matric subjects;
- Develop critical thinking and communications skills;
- Develop strong study habits and skills;
- Improve certain life skills, including workplace skills such as the ability to use computers and perform internet research;
- Gain exposure to a wide range of fields of studies and careers so as to be able to make informed academic and career choices; and
- Develop holistically through a wide range of experience and exposure to diverse people and ideas.
In addition to tutoring, a variety of challenging and enriching experiences are provided to the Interns - including regular volunteering, job shadowing and outdoor excursions - that help the Interns develop self-confidence, leadership skills, a sense of purpose and direction and an ethic of community service. "Touchstones" discussion groups, poetry writing courses and journaling that promote reflection, self-awareness and self-expression are also integral parts of the Bridging Year Programme.
Interns are offered personal support in the form of individual counseling and mentoring, particularly in exploring academic and career options. They are assisted in creating their Curricula Vitae and in practicing interview skills. SAEP's goal is that they should be empowered to discover their own special talents and interests and to experience fulfillment through self-discovery, teamwork and exercising responsibility for themselves and others.
SAEP hopes that, by the end of their Bridging Year, each Intern will have gained admission to an educational institution or training programme appropriate for him or her.
