2009 Bridging Year Tutors and Volunteers

Amani Namafukage is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has been tutoring at SAEP for several years. He is a qualified teacher in life sciences and also tutors for LEAP, a local NGO.

Alex Andrews is from Minnesota in the US. He tutored in Biology to old curriculum students. He also did research at the UCT AIDS and Society Research Unit.

Pieter Mostert has an MSc in Mathematics from UCT. He taught mathematics at SAEP and has tutored at UCT. He also lectured and was the head of tutoring at Ikamva Youth (IY).

Sophia Lewis, founder of ICAN in the UK, has provided Bridging Year interns with employability skills such as preparing a CV, honing interview skills, and researching careers.

James Bonner is from England and holds a MSc in Development Economics. At SAEP, James has taught mathematics and mathematics literacy. Before working at SAEP, James worked for the Scottish government as Economic Analyst.

Lawrence Jumba holds a degree in computer systems engineering  and an MBA from Northwestern University. He teaches physical science at SAEP.

Samkelo Ginindza is currently third year student at UCT pursuing a BSc in Math, Physical and Statistical Sciences for a career in Actuarial Sciences. Samkelo teaches accounting.

Nonjabulo Dlamini has a B.Com in Financial Accounting and is now pursuing a postgraduate diploma in Tax Law at UCT. Nonjabulo teaches accounting.

Siyanda Jack is a third year pursuing a degree in BSc in Geological Sciences and in Environmental and Geographical Sciences at UCT. He has taught media, journalism, and photography for Ubunye in addition to being involved with involved with Teachout, Active Science and Shawco (Step programme). At SAEP, he tutors geography.

David Jacobs holds a MSc in Mathematics (graduated with distinction) and has worked in a township programme aimed at identifying gifted children in Mathematics. Now IT Director for Foodbank, he teaches mathematical literacy at SAEP.

Stine Lundgren, a qualified clinical psychologist, is from Norway. She has worked at Red Cross Children's Hospital with the Outpatient Unit and Therapeutic Learning Centre. She serves as the SAEP Bridging Year counselor.

Pat Collins is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a B.S in Business Administration and graduated with Honors in Creative Writing. In addition to serving as SAEP's Financial and Office Manager, he teaches creative writing, computer skills, and budgeting skills.

Shep Willis is currently the manager of the High School and Bridging Year Programmes. In addition to these responsibilities, he also leads weekly "Great Ideas" discussions with the Bridging Year interns.

Thobela Sotshantsha is the Bridging Year assistant and a former Bridging Year intern. He has taught history and also led "Great Ideas" discussions.

Hannah Friedenberg, Ainslie Tschiltz, and Russell Martin are a group of students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who teach a non-curriculum course focusing on entrepreneurship.

Ros Emanuel is the chairman of the SAEP Management Committee and is a qualified teacher. She has tutored interns in English Literature.

Ellie Hong from Yale University has tutored mathematics , physics, and chemistry.

Anthony Sanderson is a student at Duke University. He has taught mathematics and English.

Norton, thank you so much for giving me a chance to taste the goodness of SAEP, a chance to develop myself, a chance to know what I did not know as a township girl and a chance to get off the corners of townships streets. If I didn't know about SAEP, maybe today I would be in the township streets and gaining nothing, but teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS.
